Amy L. Powell is a curator and writer. She is Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at Krannert Art Museum and Curator of Campus Arts Research in the Office for Arts Integration at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In this dual role, her work engages contemporary art and artists inside the university as a complicated and generative site for knowledge production and experimentation. She centers collaborative research with artists and scholars by leveraging campus resources to contextualize and envision the next stages of artists’ work. Her exhibitions have included solo presentations by Jen Everett (co-curated with Blair Ebony Smith), Louise Fishman, Kennedy Browne, Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme, Autumn Knight, and Zina Saro-Wiwa, and the group exhibitions Time / Image and Attachment. Previously Cynthia Woods Mitchell Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellow at Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston, she organized projects with Zineb Sedira, Clarissa Tossin, Anna Campbell, and Antena (Jen/Eleana Hofer and JD Pluecker). Her research has been supported by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Institute for Research in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she completed her Ph.D. in art history.
