About Kamari Smalls
Kamari Smalls is a multimedia artist/scholar/learner/mover from Utah engaging across lens-based forms, performance, movement, and sound composition. Personal formations in spaces of worship and the ecstatic practices within ground meditations of spirituality that are illuminated by Black girl and women repertoires. Kamari’s work manifests through the interconnectedness of the aesthetic, ecstatic, and affective; informed by being with Black women, girls, and femmes. Presently residing in Chicago after having received her MFA in Digital + Media (D+M) from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Kamari envisions her art practice as intricately intertwined with her role as an arts administrator. In her newly appointed position as Assistant to the Special Advisor to the Chancellor for Arts Integration, Kamari is committed to centering creative practice, process, and collaboration. She believes the need to engage with the arts beyond the visual necessitates a knowledge production that’s embodied and experiential.
